Why do Indians celebrate Indian Republic Day on 26-Jan-1950 onwards? Every year Indians celebrate Indian Republic Day on 26-Jan

India became an independent nation on 15-Aug-1947, a date trusted by Lord Louis Mountbatten, as it marked the second anniversary of Japan's submission to allied powers after World War II.
After India became independent it did not have its own constitution. The laws were based on a common law system and a modified version of the Government of India Act, 1935, which was brought in by the British Government.

PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA (இந்தியா அரசியல் அமைப்பின் முன்னுரை):

We the people of India having Solemnly resolved Constitution of India into, SOVEREIGN, SECULAR, SOCIALIST, DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC and to secure all its citizens: JUSTICE, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL LIBERTY OF THOUGHT, EXPRESSION, BELIEF, FAITH, AND WORSHIP.

EQUALITY - all Indians are equal before law.

The Constitution making process was organised around the deliberations of the Constituent Assembly. The Cabinet Mission Plan which was set up the Constituent Assembly of India discarded full Adult Franchise for elections to the Constituent Assembly and instead suggested indirect elections by members of the recently elected Provincial Legislative Assemblies.

In addition to members elected by the Provincial Legislative Assembly (292) the Princely States and the Chief Commissioners Provinces contributed 93 and 4 members of the Constituent Assembly taking the total membership to 389.

After partition the total number of seats came down to 299 as some provinces and Princely States became part of Pakistan. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly on 9-Dec-1946 the Constituent Assembly sat for the first time. The Constituent Assembly took almost 3 years (2 years, 11 months, 17 days to be precise) to complete its historic task of drafting the Constitution for Independent India.

During this period, it held 11 sessions covering a total of 165 days. The Constitution of India was adopted on 26-Jan-1949 and the honourable members appended their signatures to it on 24-Jan-1950.

In all 284 members actually signed the Constitution on that day when the Constitution was being signed it was drizzled outside and it was interpreted as a sign of a good women.

Drafting Committee:

On 29-Aug-1947, the Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee. It was considered to be the most important committee of the Constitutent Assembly. It was chaired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. he played a pivotal role in drafting the Constitution and also in passage of the Constitution in the Assembly. The Committee published the first draft of the Constitution in the year Feb-1948. The second draft was published after the incorporating changes by the public in Oct-1948.

The Constitution of India came into force on 26-Jan-1950 (Republic Day of India).

On that day the Assembly ceased to exist, transforming itself into the provisional Parliament of India until a new parliament was constituted in the year 1952.

The Indian National Congress on 19-Dec-1929 passed the Historic Purna Swaraj Resolution (total Independence Resolution at its Lahore Session).

A public declaration was made on 26-Jan-1930 a day which the Congress Party urged Indians to Celebrate as Independence Day.
