Mumps is a contagious viral infection caused by the paramyxovirus. It primarily affects the salivary glands, causing swelling and tenderness, typically near the jawline. In rare cases, mumps can lead to complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, or hearing loss. Vaccination with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective in preventing mumps and its potential complications.
Mumps typically present with symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. The hallmark sign is swelling and tenderness of one or more salivary glands, particularly the parotid glands located near the jawline. This swelling can cause difficulty swallowing or chewing. Some individuals may experience pain when opening their mouth or discomfort while eating acidic or sour foods. In certain cases, mumps can lead to complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, orchitis (inflammation of the testicles in males), or oophoritis (inflammation of the ovaries in females). It's essential to seek medical attention if mumps is suspected to monitor for complications and prevent spread.
