Israel's military chief says response to Iran's attack will be imminent

Army awaits decision from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Iran promises quick retaliation to any Israeli strikes

Israel’s military chief stated on Monday (local time) that the country will respond to Iran’s weekend attack and is waiting for a go-ahead message from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid fears of escalation in the Middle East crisis. Meanwhile, Iran said it will "respond in seconds" to any strikes from Israel.

The Israeli military chief, Herzi Halevi, stressed that Israel is considering its next steps and that the Apr-13-2024 Iranian strike, “will be met with a response", while Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran for Political Affairs, Ali Bagheri Kan, asserted that the response speed from Iran "will be less than a few seconds."

On Apr-13-2024 Iran launched a direct attack on its arch-foe Israel for the first time, firing more than 300 missiles and drones. This attack came in response to a deadly April 1 airstrike on Tehran’s consulate building in Syria’s capital, Damascus, which was widely blamed on Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu summoned his war cabinet for the second time in less than 24 hours on Monday to decide on the course of response to Iran's attack. The government has made no announcements on any decisions so far.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office said that Netanyahu, in a conversation with US top official Steve Scalise, that “Israel will do whatever is required to defend itself”.

Israel's military chief said, "As we look forward, we weigh our steps, and this launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles, UAVs to the territory of the State of Israel will be met with a response." Army's spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, added that the country will respond “at the time that we choose”.

According to Israel's Channel 12, the war cabinet discussed a range of options at its meeting, with the intention of hurting Iran for its drone and missile attack on Israel but without causing an all-out war.

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian official, Abolfazl Amoui, stated that the country has devised comprehensive strategies for all potential scenarios in the event of Israeli escalation and is prepared to deploy "previously unused weaponry" in case of any Israeli strikes.

Israel is under heavy international pressure not to further escalate the conflict. Several countries, including the US, have urged Israel to show restraint as it seeks to build a broad diplomatic response. "We don't want to see a war with Iran. We don't want to see a regional conflict," White House national security spokesman John Kirby said in a latest reponse, adding that it was for Israel to decide "whether and how they'll respond."

The White House said Iran did not provide warnings to the United States last week about its timeframe for launching an attack on Israel or its potential targets, and the Pentagon added "we obviously will take necessary measures to protect our forces in the region".

China said it believed Iran could "handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil" while safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity, while Russia has refrained from publicly criticizing its ally Iran but has also urged restraint, saying "Further escalation is in no one's interests".

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrialised nations is working on a package of coordinated measures against Iran following the drone attack on Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities lifted some emergency measures that had been put in place in the wake of the situation, which included a ban on some school activities and limits on large gatherings, though the country remained on high alert.
